CASE STUDY: A Divorce Mediation Platform Couples Complete on Their Own

We designed and built DivorceSettled, a platform that walks a divorcing couple through mediation on their own schedule and brings in a mediator only where one is needed.

→ The Challenge

Every mediation needed a mediator in the room for hours of intake and comparing answers, the same steps every time. That capped how many couples the practice could serve and priced some couples out.

Pain Points

  • Mediator Hours on Routine Steps: Every case used live mediator time for intake and for comparing answers, which limited how many couples the practice could take.
  • No Shared View of Agreement: Two people answered the same questions separately, and nobody could see what they already agreed on until a mediator read both sets side by side.
  • Two States, Two Sets of Rules: California and Arizona require different documents and different support calculations, and keeping track of which applied to each case was manual.

→ Our Solution

We built DivorceSettled, an AI-powered platform that takes two people through the whole mediation process on their own schedule, settles what it can without a mediator, and brings one in only where human judgment is needed.

We Provided

  • A Guided Questionnaire for Two: A 17-section questionnaire that asks each person only what applies to them. The two take turns, so neither can overwrite the other, and every answer is saved with who gave it and when.
  • AI That Finds What Is Already Agreed: The system compares both sets of answers item by item and sorts each one into agreed, disputed, or needs review. AI recognizes when two differently worded answers mean the same thing, and sends anything it is unsure of to a mediator.
  • Help Settling the Rest: Each disputed item opens a guided discussion where AI suggests compromise wording based on what both people already said. If the two get stuck, it offers a paid session with a mediator.
  • From First Answer to Signed Agreement: A document checklist built from the couple’s own answers, signing on screen, a finished agreement to download, and online payment. Every step and every AI suggestion is logged.

Testimonial

“We came to Lithyem wanting to build software that could do something genuinely difficult: walk two people through a divorce questionnaire and show them where they actually agree and where they don’t agree. We briefly considered building this ourselves but quickly realized it was beyond our capabilities. Michael understood the concept from the start and was consistently responsive throughout the build. They set clear expectations about timeline and deliverables up front and then met them. DivorceSettled’s agreement-finding engine is live today and working for paying clients.”
